Any changes in the properties of Drilling Mud can be a warning of a potential Drilling hazard. These can be expensive in lost Rig Time and potentially dangerous to Well-site personnel yet the vital parameters of Mud Weight and Mud Viscosity are only 'Batch Tested' by the labour intensive Marsh Funnel and Mud Balance.

Many other Drilling Parameters are continually monitored, from Stand Pipe Pressure to Rotary torque, from Pit levels to Gas content yet the Industry relies on a procedure developed in the 50s to monitor the Mud.
